Troop 303 Backpacks the Smokies

Dahlonega, GA March 25-29 – Three local scouts from BSA Troop 303 took a 60+ mile backpacking trek through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during their Spring Break. Their adventure started at the trailhead at Smokemont Campground hiking up the creek and crossing the ridgeline to Kephart Shelter. They meet the Appalachian Trail and headed south toward Newfound Gap. Camping at Mount Collins Shelter, they prepared to cross Clingman’s Dome at 6,643 feet on their way to Derrick’s Knob for the night. They continued to Mollie’s Ridge and finished their exploration just pass Fontana Dam at the south trailhead. Highlights of the trip included seeing a wildlife, the ridgeline views, playing in the snow, working on their wilderness skills, camping in the shelters with thru-hikers on AT, and completing this 60+ miles backpacking trek.
